Fishermen's Memorial

Urk is a lovely and active fishing village in the Netherlands but like every fishing village it too has more than it's fair share of tragedies. The statue here is to commemorate those who did not return from their fishing trips. Known as the "Urker VissersMemorial" in Dutch, it shows a woman looking out to see waiting for her loved one(s) to return. Very poignant indeed. On the side walls are shields bearing the names of those who did not return. The names also remind us that fishing was a family business with many having the same surname. The lighthouse is another iconic part of this place.
